Gannett Fleming Regional Traffic Management Center Operator I in Syracuse, New York

What You Will Do:

Gannett Fleming is looking for a Regional Traffic Management (TMC) Center Operator in the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Region 3 office located in Syracuse, NY. With unique growth opportunities, this may be the opportunity for you! We are currently offering full time and part time openings for this position.

This is a part-time position with hours of 6 AM - 6 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

As a TMC Operator, you will be responsible for Traffic Operations situational awareness, data entry and monitoring a designated region, district, and roadway for normal and emergency conditions to identify incidents, coordinating responses using various cutting-edge software technology tools and ultramodern traffic monitoring equipment, (CCTV and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)) to continuously update statuses for web-base applications, NYSDOT and Consultant management.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Call-taking and data entry into various computer logs and record keeping systems.
  • Gathering situational awareness on the Regional NYSDOT road network in the Traffic Management Center (TMC) by monitoring traffic cameras installed along the road network and declaring and responding to traffic incidents in a timely manner.
  • Dispatching NYSDOT help truck crews for routine and emergency traffic situations.
  • Deploy and monitor signage plans on the NYSDOT's VMS (Virtual Message System Boards) and DMS (Dynamic Message Signs)
  • Monitor the real-time operation of over-height vehicle detection systems, construction work zones and roadway closures
  • Dispatch traffic signals malfunctions and highway maintenance calls to appropriate personnel or jurisdictions
  • Monitor and enter information into public service platforms to verify the accuracy of traveler information via web-based traffic information and map sites
  • Pro-actively monitor "hotspots", smart work zones, motor vehicle accidents, weather conditions, and special events for any changes in road/lane alignments and locations
  • Perform record keeping tasks, computer entries and complete daily reports.
Education | Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required, Military veterans welcome
  • Preferred - An associate degree, or equivalent of 2 years' experience in; military service, public safety (911/Police/Fire-Rescue or similar), emergency management, transportation dispatch, customer service support, surveillance or similar environments
  • Must have an aptitude for providing exceptional customer service, interpersonal relationships and ability to work well within a diverse group.
  • Capacity to clearly communicate written and verbal information in English
  • Ability to take calls, dispatch via radio or telephone and communicate in a clear, calm and detailed manner.
  • Ability to coordinate real-time activities and priorities with minimal supervision
  • Possess strong knowledge of local roadways
  • Capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to use computers in "Windows Office Suite" and other web applications and completing clear and detailed written reports using effortless keyboarding skills
  • Adherence to company code of conduct and related policies & procedures
  • Must be willing to work all shifts including weekends, overnights and holidays and be on-call if necessary
  • Must possess reliable transportation, a valid driver's license and a strong work ethic
