POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is for an Assistant Teacher full-time position (35h a week) in our Early Childhood Education Center also known as the Preschool/Maternelle (Grade PK2-K), starting in August 2024 for the 2024-2025 school year. Daily hours are 8am-4pm or 9am-5pm.

Assistants Teachers are responsible for assisting the Preschool or Kindergarten Lead Teachers in managing and caring for the well-being of students in the classroom, in the bathroom and on the playground within the context of implementing a program of activities that promote the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of each child enrolled in the program.

Assistants Teachers report to their classroom teacher(s) and above them to the Assistant Principal and Principal of the Preschool. If and when acting as Extended Care monitor for before or after school care, reporting is to the Extended Care Supervisor.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist Lead Teacher(s) and collaborate closely with them in implementing the daily program of activities based on best practices and researched principles of child development and in accordance with the program’s curriculum, social-emotional learning program (Responsive Classroom) and school culture. 

  • Actively supervise students during class time, bathroom time, lunch time, transition times and during recess times ∙ Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of autonomy, self-esteem, and self-discipline. 

  • Assisting with diaper changes and toilet training as needed.

  • Observe each child daily to assess skills, interests, and needs and use this information to facilitate learning and growth. 

  • Maintain a well-organized, safe and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of children (including maintaining classroom cleanliness and keeping materials neat and arranged) 

  • Intervene with vigilance and respect to help any child in need, prevent accident or injury to the degree possible, and in any situation requiring assistance 

  • Establish a positive relationship with each child’s family. 

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned, including acting as extended care staff before or after school or bus monitor duties before or after school, if asked

     

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Proficient in the language of teaching (French and English)

  • Experience working with young children (age 2-5 years old)

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Certified in early childhood education or currently working towards the completion of one: at least 6 Early Childhood Education Units (12 would be a plus)

  • CPR & First Aid certified or obtain certification upon hire

  • Be mentally and physically capable of caring for a large group of children alone in a classroom.

  • Have an awareness of the unique needs of young children and have appropriate expectations of their abilities

  • Able to kneel, bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry children up to 70lbs

  • Possess a strong work ethic, be punctual, and have minimal absences.

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

     

    Salary range for this position: $58,029 - $98,454 depending upon experience and qualifications.
