Job Description Summary

GE’s Power Conversion business, part of GE Vernova, provides electrification systems that are critical to customers’ power and energy needs for their high-performance applications. We work with some of the world’s major energy, maritime and industrial organizations, helping to enable a transition to energy efficiency and decarbonization, including through our specialist motors, drives and control technologies.

The Rail and Power Quality Local CTH will be a recognised expert in the field of power systems with deep domain expertise and experience in this field with a particular focus on Rail and Power Quality for Utilities grid connected power systems. The Local CTH will provide technical leadership on R&D programs, projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business. The Local CTH will be responsible for major and complex power systems technical assignments with long-term business implications and will contribute to the overall power systems strategy both for the UK and the global strategy for Rail and Power Quality for Utilities covering the full project lifecycle from pre-bid through Tendering/FEED through to contract execution/delivery and long-term services and support.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Recognized technical expert in power systems and associated components.

  • Provide technical leadership and consultation to design teams, management, and supplier organisations.

  • Enhance technical excellence within the design team and remain cognizant of state-of-the-art in area of expertise. Identify and recommend where improvements, in knowledge of the specific discipline, are needed or where technical training is needed.

  • Specify, design and document technical solutions to meet specific application requirements.

  • Provide leadership to help focus and integrate new power systems technology smoothly into applications and suggest areas where technology advancements are needed and recommend approaches/programs to pursue.

  • Undertake all aspects of power systems design:- including modelling, analysis, and simulation of power systems, using standard industrial design tools such as: MATLAB, Simulink, PLECS etc.

  • Application of engineering standards and development of design best practices.

  • Ensuring power system designs comply with the relevant health & safety and international standards.

  • Support attainment of on-time delivery, cost, and quality targets on projects.

  • Provides technical leadership in design reviews, task forces, industrial committees, and design boards as necessary.

  • Provides technical support to the sales / business development teams in customer meetings and technical workshops.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, masters or PhD in power systems is desirable.

  • Significant design experience in power systems.

  • Willing to travel within UK and overseas for short-term working.

  • Knowledge of the latest state of the art LV/MV/HV Thyristor and IGBT/MOSFET/SIC based power electronic converter control systems design and analysis.

  • Knowledge of MV/HV Grid Connected Substations and associated protection and control.

  • Knowledge of Grid connected power systems modelling.

  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of projects, adapts to changing circumstances, able to deal with ambiguity making positive use of the opportunities it presents.

  • Able to make prompt, clear decisions. Probes for further information or greater understanding of a problem and produces workable solutions.

  • Excellent communication skills: listens, consults others and communicates proactively.

  • Strong report writing skills; writes clearly and succinctly to meet the needs and understanding of the intended audience.

  • Strong personal organisational skills, ability to manage time effectively, monitors performance against deadlines and milestones, works productively in a pressurised environment.

  • Focuses on customer needs and satisfaction, consistently achieves project goals.

  • Able to establish good relationships with customers and colleagues, able to build effective networks inside and outside of the organisation. Adapts interpersonal style to suit different people and/or situations.
