Mayo Clinic RTP-Research Fellow - Dr. Hassan Lab in Rochester, Minnesota

Why Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic is top-ranked in more specialties than any other care provider according to U.S. News & World Report. As we work together to put the needs of the patient first, we are also dedicated to our employees, investing in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefit plans (https://jobs.mayoclinic.org/benefits/) – to take care of you and your family, now and in the future. And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic. You’ll thrive in an environment that supports innovation, is committed to ending racism and supporting diversity, equity and inclusion, and provides the resources you need to succeed.

Responsibilities

Two Post-Doctoral Research Fellow positions are available in the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension and Department of Physiology & Biomedical Engineering. The Post-Doctoral Research Fellows will work on research projects focusing on the molecular mechanisms regulating intestinal oxalate transport, with special emphasis on SLC26A6 (an anion exchanger with an essential role in intestinal oxalate secretion), and how this regulation might pertain to the risk of hyperoxalemia, hyperoxaluria and related disorders (including kidney stones). One of the main projects is about evaluating the therapeutic effects of Oxalobacter formigenes (a probiotic gut bacterium)-derived novel proteins (including OxBSel1-2 and OxBSel1-14) and OxBSel1-14-derived small peptides (P8 and P9) as potential novel therapeutics agents for hyperoxalemia, hyperoxaluria, and related disorders (including kidney stones). This include evaluating the therapeutic effects of optimized (through structural modifications) P8 and P9, P8 and P9-peptide loaded nanoparticles, and Lactococcus lactis expressing P8, P9, OxBSel1-2, and OxBSel1-14 in hyperoxaluric and hyperoxalemic mice. Another project is about evaluating the therapeutic effects of small molecules drugs already in clinical use in humans as potential novel therapeutics agents for hyperoxalemia, hyperoxaluria, and related disorders. Other projects include 1. Identifying P8 and P9 critical amino acids and signaling pathways, as well as the receptor(s) by which they stimulate intestinal oxalate transport. 2. Pathogenesis of obesity- and IBD-associated hyperoxaluria, including the potential role of the gut microbiome.

Dr. Hassan’s research has obtained several prestigious awards/grants, including an NIH fast-track STTR grant and an NSF Phases I & II STTR grants to achieve further pre-clinical milestones towards commercialization of these novel peptides. Substantial resources are in place for this work. Potential for independent work and publications exists.

Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.

  • A PhD or MD/PhD degree with a background in cell biology, molecular biology, or a similar field. MDs with extensive wet lab experience will be considered.

  • Prior experience with animals is highly preferred – training can be provided.

  • Experience with basic molecular biology and biochemical techniques.

  • Desire to learn new skills and perform meticulous work.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written.

  • Experience with writing and publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts.
