Sargent & Lundy Nuclear Structural Engineering Intern (Summer 2024) in Richland, Washington

Description

Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories. Specifically, we support the DOE Environmental Management Directorate as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories and sites. What does this mean? You can be a part of multi-discipline design teams supporting projects cleaning up the environmental damage associated with the legacy nuclear weapons production complex and/or preserving our country’s nuclear deterrent. Sargent & Lundy’s personnel design facilities, systems, and equipment that treat, store, and dispose of nuclear waste as well as systems that safely handle and process nuclear material. This mission-critical work is meaningful and challenging – work you can be proud of.

Our Government Services Group, one of our five (5) market-focused business units, has opportunities for engineering professionals in our specialty design and engineering group. This group specializes in the design of special-purpose gloveboxes and the associated controls and auxiliary systems, precision furnaces, hot cells, custom pressure vessels, and other one-of-a-kind equipment.

As a Structural Engineering Intern, you will be assigned to work on a project team and assist the engineering team members in the execution of their project work. These projects may involve the design of new power plants and/or modifications and upgrades to existing power plant systems, components, and structures.

Working under the direction of engineers, this position may offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your academic background in Structural Engineering in one or more of the following areas:

  • Assist in the preparation of engineering calculations, specifications, and designs

  • Assist in the review of structural design drawings and vendor drawings

  • Directly apply your knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design

  • Be assigned to support a team of engineers and designers in performing structural analysis and design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment and piping supports, and foundations

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. Citizen; Dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Must be able to pass a U.S. Government security clearance check

  • Must be graduating in Winter 2024 or Spring/Summer 2025 with a BSCE or MSCE with a major in Structures from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background and an interest in behavior of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, reinforced concrete design and foundation design

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with strong PC skills are required

    Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Previous internship or co-op experience in an engineering office

  • Knowledge of any of the following programs: MathCad, SAP2000, or ANSYS

    Salary Range

    $47,000 - $53,000
