Sargent & Lundy Mechanical Engineering Intern (Summer 2024) in Richland, Washington

Description

Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories. Specifically, we support the DOE Environmental Management Directorate as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories and sites. What does this mean? You can be a part of multi-discipline design teams supporting projects cleaning up the environmental damage associated with the legacy nuclear weapons production complex and/or preserving our country’s nuclear deterrent. Sargent & Lundy’s personnel design facilities, systems, and equipment that treat, store, and dispose of nuclear waste as well as systems that safely handle and process nuclear material. This mission-critical work is meaningful and challenging – work you can be proud of.

Our Government Services Group, one of our five (5) market-focused business units, has opportunities for engineering professionals in our specialty design and engineering group. This group specializes in the design of special-purpose gloveboxes and the associated controls and auxiliary systems, precision furnaces, hot cells, custom pressure vessels, and other one-of-a-kind equipment.

  • As a Mechanical Associate Intern, you will be assigned to work on a project team and assist the engineering team members in the execution of their project work. These projects may involve the design of new and/or modifications and upgrades to engineering projects.

  • Working under the direction of the Design Group Lead, this position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your academic background in engineering, in one or more of the following areas:

  • Support drafting/design efforts

  • Assist in the preparation of engineering calculations, specifications, and designs

  • Work on a variety of tasks associated with project reporting, such as tracking and evaluating project activities, project progress, and associated data

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. Citizen; Dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Must be able to pass a U.S. Government security clearance check

  • This position requires completion of coursework toward a BSME from an ABET-accredited engineering program, commensurate with that of at least starting as a college Junior-level mechanical engineering student

  • Candidates shall possess working knowledge of 2-D and 3-D modeling, using industry-standard software tools such as AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks

  • Good verbal and written communication skills along with strong PC skills are required

    Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Expertise in software tools such as MATLAB, Excel, and the other Microsoft Office software tools, is highly desirable

  • An understanding of the practical application of engineering and technology, including applying systems, principles, techniques, and procedures to a project design

    Salary Range

    $47,000 - $53,000
