Are you looking for an exciting role as part of a global team of physicists, engineers and software developers defining the new field of Quantum Computing? We are looking for you! We're looking for a Senior Cryogenic Mechnical Engineer.

Microsoft is researching the future of Quantum Computing, including theory, hardware, and software. As a part of this effort the Quantum Mechanical Engineering team is developing cryogenic refrigerator architecture to enable the advancement of Quantum Computing. We are on the cusp of an accelerated effort in quantum computing and this position is an opportunity to get in at the start of this new intense phase.

Responsibilities

  • The design,development, and maintenance of Cryogenic Equipment.

  • Improving and upgrading existing Cryogenic Equipment.

  • Ensure performance and reliability ofCryogenic Equipment.

  • Preparing 3D CAD, 2D drawings and bills of material for custom cryogenic products and non-standard cryogenic products.

  • Perform all necessary prototyping and analysis to support your designs.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 6+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 4+ years experience in industry or in a research and development environment

  • OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in industry or in a research and development environment, could include completion of a post-doctoral research position

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in all of the following areas: 

  • Hands-on systems experience and expertise in design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and operating of 4K and mK cryogenic refrigerators.

  • 3D CAD experience, Creo and/or SolidWorks.

  • Designing for manufacturability, and installing, of ultr-high vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualification

  • Engineering project management and best practices.

  • Analytical problem solving and system troubleshooting best practices.

  • Analytical techniques including root cause analysis, basic structural, thermal, stress, machine design.

  • Familiar with:

  • Liquefier design, maintenance, and operation.

  • Dilution refrigerator design, maintenance, and operation.

  • COMSOL/Ansys

  • Helium leak Checking and debug.

  • Residual Gas Analyzers.

  • Vacuum pump cart with molecular turbo.

  • Transfer dewars.

  • General machine shop tools (Mil, Lathe, Hand tools...etc).

Quantum Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
