Job Information

Boston Globe Media Partners Express Desk Reporter, RI in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

The Boston Globe is hiring an Express Desk reporter to focus on Rhode Island, a critical part of our regional expansion. This reporter will primarily cover breaking and spot news and write creative stories intended for a digital audience, both on our website and on various social media platforms. They must be able to write quickly, clearly, and accurately, and cover a wide range of in-the-moment topics.

Our express reporters are some of the most-read and most-versatile journalists at the Globe. They strike a conversational, accessible tone that engages readers, and are willing to explore a variety of subjects. This reporter should have a digital-first mindset, strong reporting and writing skills, an understanding of SEO, a hearty appetite for news and, ideally, a passion for and knowledge of the Ocean State.

The ideal candidate should possess a high metabolism and strong initiative. They should be curious, creative, and enterprising, willing to mine social media and connect with sources for ideas to pitch every day. They should be able to confirm information and write quickly for publication online, and then update the stories throughout the day if needed, taking feeds from other reporters if required and moving the story forward by exploring other angles and reporting out new information.

Responsibilities:

  • Report and write multiple short news stories each day on topics including crime, politics, education, arts, business, health, the environment, and more.

  • Scour social media, TV news, community forums, and national news outlets for trending and interesting ideas to localize for our Rhode Island audience.

  • Distill complex subjects, reports, and news releases into readable articles

  • Digitally produce these stories for publication on Globe.com/RI and on social media platforms

  • Cooperate and collaborate with the rest of the Globe Rhode Island team in covering breaking news events

  • Work closely with editors and writers on the Express Desk in Boston, as well as with the Audience Development team to amplify and promote Rhode Island stories.

  • Monitor analytics and metrics to surface trends and hone our coverage of Rhode Island news.

    Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years experience as a journalist at a major market or publication

  • Ability to write clean, compelling copy on tight deadlines

  • Appetite for writing multiple stories on a variety of topics each day

  • Digitally savvy and familiar with audience analytics

  • Curious, creative, and eager to explore

  • An eye for good stories that transcend location

  • Multimedia experience – especially in audio, video, and social media-based  storytelling – is a plus

  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

This is a full-time position based in our Providence, R.I., office, with a hybrid in-person/remote option. Candidates should be based in Rhode Island or willing to move to the Greater Providence area.

This reporter will also work closely with Express Desk editors and writers and the audience development team in the Globe's Boston office, which may require occasional trips to Boston. Some night and weekend work may be required, as news dictates.

Please submit examples of your work (clips, links to online content, or a link to your digital portfolio) along with a cover letter when you apply.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
