Summary:

Under the supervision of Radiology Leadership, Technologists and Nurses the Imaging Assistant is responsible for assisting members of the patient care team and providing a broad range of health care services such as: patient check-in, preparation for the visit, patient education, assistance with exam and room prep, and patient transporting using a wide variety of radiographic equipment, computers, and software. The Imaging Assistant addresses the personal, physical and emotional needs of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, or geriatric patient and family consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the Radiology Department.

Responsibilities:

  1. May be assigned to work in a variety of imaging sections, assist multiple radiology modalities and/or clinical services per operational needs.

  2. Coordinates timely throughput for radiology patients, by checking the imaging order for complete information, proper exam and/or procedure and schedules and prioritizes exams based on priority level to affect the most efficient workflow in the department. Works closely with team leader and technologists to coordinate add-ons. Escalates hurdles to timely completion to Technologist, Nurse and Manger as necessary.

  3. Utilizes Cerner to locate all relevant patient history, prepares online forms and any necessary paperwork for patient exams. Communicates prep information, obtains relevant medical history, asks pre-exam screening questions, and screens patient for contraindications or contrast risks and alerts technologists to any contraindications. Completes exams within Cerner, scans paperwork and elevates exam for interpretation.

  4. Ensures all patients are registered and “arrived”. Properly identifies patient using two patient identifiers prior to transporting or escorting to and from main waiting area, dressing rooms, exam rooms, ED and inpatient floors.

  5. Provides high level of customer service and prepares patients for imaging exams with professionalism and compassion. Instructs patients on how to change clothing for study as required, provides assistance to patients as needed and reports special care needs and patient concerns to the technologist and or nurse.

  6. Assists technologists with patients as needed including, but not limited to; sets up the imaging room to coincide with the examination being performed, including coil placement, lifting/transferring patients to exam table, positioning patients on the table ensuring patient comfort and modesty, monitors patients in holding area. Maintains competency utilizing lifting devices.

  7. May assist technologist, nurse, or other health care providers with contrast reactions or emergency situations, by readying the area, gathering emergency equipment and supplies and directing response team to the patient.

  8. Answers telephone and Vocera promptly, answering patient and healthcare provider questions, in a courteous manner, identifying self and department at all times. Exercises ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing their duties, maintaining strict patient confidentiality.

  9. Maintains clean, well-stocked exam and dressing rooms including but not limited to cleaning counters, emptying trash, removing and restocking linen, and replenishing supplies.

  10. Completes annual radiation and MRI safety and infection control training and actively applies principles to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

  11. Maintains and Models Nuvance Health Values.

  12. Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.

  13. Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Education

  • Minimum: High School diploma or equivalent

  • Preferred: Enrollment in a Medical Assistant program or Radiology Imaging program

Work Experience

  • Minimum: Prior experience in healthcare or customer service

  • Preferred: Patient care experience in a clinical imaging department

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:

  • Effective oral and written professional communications skills.

  • Self-motivated & directed with regard to an increasing level of understanding and knowledge.

  • Ability to perform under stress with frequent interruptions and /or distractions.

  • General knowledge of simple medical procedures or terminology.

  • General understanding of office equipment.

  • Good communication, interpersonal and customer relations skills.

License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Savings certification – within six months of hire.
