Amazon Thin Film Engineer, AWS CQC Materials in Pasadena, California

Description

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) is a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technicians, on a mission to develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer.

You will be joining a team located in Pasadena, CA that pursues material innovations to improve the performance of quantum processors. We are looking to hire a thin film engineer who will contribute to the development of new thin film processes – and the continuous improvement of existing processes – relevant to superconducting quantum device applications. You will operate and maintain vacuum deposition systems & materials characterization equipment, process data, and regularly communicate your results to teammates and stakeholders across the CQC. Strong organization and communication skills are essential.

Key job responsibilities

  • Develop new thin film deposition processes for integration in superconducting quantum devices

  • Evaluate thin film material properties using a suite of characterization instruments

  • Work with a team of engineers and scientists in a cleanroom environment, assisting with all hands-on aspects of thin film development

  • Perform routine maintenance on vacuum systems

  • Develop and maintain protocols for sample preparation and data handling

About the team

Our team contributes to the fabrication of processors and other hardware that enable quantum computing technologies. Doing that necessitates the development of materials with tailored properties for superconducting circuits. Engineers on the Materials team operate deposition & characterization systems in order to develop and optimize thin film processes for use in these devices. They work alongside research scientists to help deliver fabricated devices for quantum computing experiments.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, material science, physics or equivalent

  • Experience with one or more of the following deposition techniques: magnetron sputtering, ALD, e-beam or thermal evaporation, MBE, PLD, MOCVD, PECVD

  • Experience with one or more of the following characterization techniques: XRD, XPS, PPMS, TEM, AFM, SEM, FIB, RBS, SIMS, ellipsometry

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, applied physics, or related field

  • 2+ years of relevant hands-on experience in an industrial or academic laboratory, or a fabrication cleanroom

  • Proficiency in a scientific programming environment (e.g. Python, Matlab, Mathematica)

  • Self-starter with excellent organizational skills

  • Good problem solving, analytical, writing and communication skills

  • Curiosity and capability to rapidly research and learn new instruments, techniques and technical topics

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $77,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
