• Changing the Future of the Anatomic Pathology Department: The Cytopathology Lab serves all patient populations at Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health, Stanford Health Care Clinics, and Stanford Health Care Affiliates. Cytologist at Stanford Health Care serve the community by providing elite patient care in their day-to-day workflows, working closely with, and playing a role in the education of residents, and interacting with world renown Pathologists’.

A Brief Overview

Performs microscopic evaluations of cytologic specimens from various organs or organ systems. Evaluations include identifying and describing all pathologic cells and microorganisms, using the cytotechnologists education and experience to make fine distinctions between normal, abnormal and malignant cells that may result from conditions relative to cancer, pre-malignant changes, inflammation, infection, endocrine changes and changes caused by radiation and chemotherapeutic agents. The cytotechnologist is responsible for composing clear, concise, and accurate reports for each case examined and entering the reports in the laboratory information system. Assists physicians with preparation and evaluation of fine needle aspirates. Prepares specimens for microscopic evaluation.

  • Assists radiologist and other physicians in fine needle aspiration.

  • Complies with all applicable health and safety policies.

  • Participates in daily review of cases.

  • Participates in quality improvement projects as appropriate.

  • Participation in professionally oriented continuing education.

  • Performs microscopic evaluation of specimens and prepares computer generated reports for each specimen evaluated.

  • Performs other work related duties as assigned.

  • Specimen preparation and staining as appropriate.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability operate and maintain medical equipment and apparatuses

  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions and interpret results

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions

  • Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to technological changes in the laboratory

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities

  • Ability to perform tasks according to prescribed procedures

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization

  • Knowledge and technical proficiency in specialty areas assigned within the laboratory

  • Knowledge of infection prevention policies and procedures

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility

  • Knowledge of mathematics general science and laboratory techniques

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $62.43 - $70.31 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
