Conagra Senior Packaging Engineer in Omaha, Nebraska

We are looking for a Senior Packaging Engineer to join our R&D team in our corporate office in either Chicago, Illinois or Omaha, Nebraska.

Conagra's R&D facilities are state-of-the-art, including dedicated packaging spaces for ideation, design, and prototyping. Engineers have the ability perform in-house package testing and physical prototyping to bring new innovations to life utilizing our top-of-the-line equipment within our labs and other spaces.

As the Senior Packaging Engineer, reporting to the Manager of Packaging, you will provide technical expertise and leadership on the Maximizing Value and Productivity (MVP) Team, a strategic cost function of the R&D organization. You will independently conceive and conduct research to influence scientific knowledge and technological developments, assessing feasibility and soundness of proposed experimental approaches, materials, or equipment then stage projects for execution. The MVP Packaging team also is a key contributor to the companies Sustainability goals making huge stride in material reduction and improved transportation and warehousing.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Explore packaging design changes across multiple platforms including Snacks/Baking, Frozen/Refrigerated, and Grocery, working with brands across our portfolio.

  • Independently lead packaging development projects.

  • Build and present business cases for packaging design changes supported by financial assessments, technical feasibility, customer benefit impact analysis, and risk assessments.

  • Participate in ideation sessions in collaboration with Food Design, Process Engineering, Marketing, Quality, Procurement and Demand Sciences partners, gaining agreement with all partners and senior leadership to approve strategic projects.

  • Scout and evaluate new technologies and supplier capabilities to identify viable options for material and process improvements, maintaining a high awareness of competitor and adjacent trends within the packaging industry.

  • Demonstrate creativity in the development of packaging systems, promoting the spirit of innovation across networks.

  • Build on an understanding of strategic packages, materials, and processes to help develop new or improved packaging systems.

  • Execute experiments and plant trials; prepare results in technical reports and presentations for review.

  • Interpret and develop technical specifications.

  • Calculate and report on sustainability benefits of packaging changes.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Packaging, Engineering, or related field.

  • 7+ years work experience in packaging industry, Food or CPG preferred.

  • Experience with packaging materials capabilities and equipment.

  • Understanding of government regulatory requirements in the processing of food.

  • Experience with food science and how food affects packaging.

  • Experience with food safety, sanitary design, and equipment cleaning.

  • Experience with physical and structure package testing procedures.

  • Financial understanding to improve profitability.

  • May travel up to 40% depending on projects.

Physical Requirements

  • Exposure to manufacturing environments for periodic extended workdays to include loud noise, excessive heat, cold, wet, and slippery conditions and exposure to allergens.

  • Travel can be up to 40% of the time based on projects but may be less.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs periodically.

  • Ability to stand for sit or stand for extended periods of time.

We require applicants for this role to be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring employer sponsorship either now or in the future.

This role will typically be in the office 4 days a week. Fridays are typically remote.
