GE Vernova Lead Engineer – Electric Machines in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

GE Vernova’s Advanced Research business is the central innovation engine for GE’s portfolio of energy businesses, which will be unified under one banner called GE Vernova. The research organization is made up of 250+ researchers representing virtually every major scientific and engineering discipline. Collectively, they are driving major research programs and initiatives to decarbonize power, accelerate renewables, and promote electrification and the creation of a 21st century grid fit to power a zero-carbon energy future.

As a Lead Engineer – Electric Machines in Vernova Advanced Research, Electrical Systems team, you will be involved in the design of electrical machines and their integration into energy conversion systems that will help drive the transition to cleaner energy. You will be contributing to the development of advanced machine system concepts as well as their implementation for application to power generation applications.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will contribute to the planning, development, and transition of technologies from concept to products and/or services for GE internal and external clients.

You will:

  • Conduct research through modeling simulation, and design electric machines

  • Develop and test machines.

  • Participate with multidisciplinary teams in the development of new power technologies and capabilities for GE's next generation product platforms.

  • Innovate in the electric machines domain.

  • Participate with multi-disciplinary teams in the development of new power technologies and capabilities for GE's next generation product platforms.

  • Effectively communicate results by preparing written reports and making presentations that describe analyses and solutions.

  • Connect the organization to the latest technology developments and trends in industry

  • Contribute to proposals for GE businesses as well as government agencies

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 2 years of professional experience developing electric machines or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 6 years of professional experience developing electric machines

  • Due to the nature of the duties of this position, this role requires the individual to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics:

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical machines and their controls, including electromagnetic, insulation, thermal as well as mechanical technology aspects

  • Experience in designing electric machines for a wide range of applications.

  • Experience with surface permanent magnet, interior permanent magnet, flux switching, induction, reluctance, and superconducting machine technologies.

  • Experience with development of enabling technologies for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.

  • Expertise in simulation tools such as finite elements, MATLAB (Simulink) and others such as PLECS

  • Strong background in developing multi-physics analytical models of electric machines.

  • Comfort with the electronic power converters used to excite electric machines.

  • Connections in industry and academia

  • Record of publications and patents

  • Demonstrated successful track record of completing tasks and deliverables on schedule and on budget.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including demonstrated formal writing and presentation experience.

The salary range for this position is $98,400-$164,000 US dollars annually. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus.
