Job Description

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Cedar Rapids Service Area (CRSA) is seeking a Typist Advanced to work in the Jasper County office to support Social Workers, Income Maintenance Workers, and administrative staff by providing a variety of both general and specialized clerical tasks. This is a full-time position, working Monday through Friday from 8 am – 4:30 pm, with a strong opportunity for advancement, growth and development.

The Typist Advanced is a very important role. This is the face of the office, who greets, screens and routes all our internal and external customers to the right area while providing quality face to face, over the phone and email communication to our internal and external customers. This position also assists with typing reports, forms, letters, correspondence and will assist Income Maintenance and Social Worker staff in prepping, scanning and imaging paper documents for uploading into electronic document management systems. Additional responsibilities include processing incoming and outgoing mail, filing and managing closed case storage including the destruction of computer case records.

  • Efficiently and independently use Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and other necessary systems to perform duties.

  • Comprehend and adhere to confidentiality and security provisions.

  • Prioritize tasks and time to meet established performance goals and critical deadlines.

  • Work productively and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Adaptable to change as we continually strive to improve processes within the Department.

  • Accurately enter, retrieve, file generated information in various database systems.

  • Travel occasionally when it is necessary to cover absences or vacancies in other offices.

  • Lift and deliver boxes including, but not limited to paper, mail, case files and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • The ability to type at least 40 words per minute,**as verified by a typing test, and experience equal to one year of full-time clerical office support work.

  • The ability to type at least 40 words per minute, as verified by a typing test, and a total of one year of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one year of post-high school course work in an accredited secretarial, business, or closely-related curriculum or 30 semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a Typist.
