Paramount Reporter (Des Moines, IA) in New York, New York

CBS News and Stations is looking for a passionate, energetic multi-skilled Reporter to join our team. The ideal candidate will be an ethical journalist whose reporting goes deeper than headlines to offer context and insight on issues of importance in Middle America and will be based in Des Moines. The Reporter should be creative and dedicated full-time with impeccable news judgment, strong story-telling abilities, passionate about local and national news and solid on camera delivery. The Reporter should be passionate about owning the story from cradle-to-grave including producing, writing, shooting and editing. The selected candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to possess excellent interpersonal skills, willingness to work in a collaborative manner, a strong work ethic and enthusiasm for news and storytelling.

Responsibilities:

  • Report for Shows, Streams, Stations, including live shots in the field and in-studio debriefs

  • Pitch segments reflective of the community

  • Develop sources, break news and advance stories that can be turned quickly

  • Establish and maintain relationships/sources within the community

  • Quickly gather and verify its accuracy, disseminating critical information for air

  • Shoot and edit breaking news, day of air, features, ensuringall pictures and sound are of the highest quality and accurately recorded

  • Write crisp, conversational copy that engages viewers

  • Support Correspondents and Bureaus as needed

  • Collaborate in the field to capture necessary story elements

  • Perform other duties as assigned by editorial leadership

  • Appropriately represent CBS News and Stations in public settings including social media

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years reporting experience at a news organization with proven experience in the field, managing story development

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in journalism and/or a related field

  • Proven track record of shooting, writing, and editing visually compelling stories seeking diverse perspectives

  • Ability to deliver the news accurately and concisely

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities under tight deadlines

  • Ability to take on assignment that vary from extreme weather to environments including areas of social unrest, protests, etc.,

  • Ability to work long hours as news dictates which could include working on regular days off, weekends and overnight with short notice

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to listen and receive feedback

  • Proficiency at shooting with a prosumer-style camera (latest equipment), capturing clean audio using hardwired and wireless microphones, and setting up basic lighting

  • Must be open to occasional travel

  • Valid drivers license is required along with the ability and willingness to drive
