Summary To set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses to fabricate components for molds, machine and inspection fixtures to close tolerance drawing specifications. May fabricate metal parts for experimental apparatus or prototype equipment working from drawings and written instructions. Position Requirements Minimum of High School Education or GED equivalent and a two year degree in machine tool technology. Must have thorough knowledge of the use of precision measuring instruments. Layout and drawings. Minimum of five years machining experience in a non-production setting or combination of experience and approved vocational machine shop and tool and die training. Duties and Responsibilities Under minimal supervision, perform a variety of tasks which require a knowledge of fabrication techniques, tools, materials and equipment. Performs milling, turning, boring, drilling, polishing, grinding and threading to build new tooling. Uses precision measuring devices such as micrometers, dial calipers and indicators to verify work compliance with established shop practices and drawing specifications. Constructs components and parts to extremely close tolerances which may have unusual or nonstandard shapes. Setup and operate high end CNC EDM both wire and ram style. Setup and operate high end CNC Mills. Works from engineering drawings, sketches, verbal instructions, or existing parts to produce gages, tools, parts for machines, molds and other equipment. Maintains good production and quality standards. Maintains safe work habits and good housekeeping at all times. Ability to measure and fit molds as required. Keep work area clean and orderly. Perform other associated duties as needed to continue the operation of the department in the most productive and efficient manner.
