\ \ Instructor/Teaching Assistant Professor\ \ Department: 3670010090 Horticulture Natural Resources\ Job no: 516553\ Employment type: Academic / Faculty - 12 month\ Location: Manhattan, Kansas\ Worksite: On-site requirement\ Categories: Academic Advising / Support, Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Sciences\ Pay Grade: 001\ \ \ About This Role:\ The Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources is seeking a creative, innovative 12-Month Instructor OR Teaching Assistant Professor to teach courses and advise students in our undergraduate Park Management and Conservation (PMC) major.\ \ Job description/responsibilities:\ Teaching -

  • Teach undergraduate courses in PMC. The anticipated teaching load is three F2F courses per semester, plus internship/practicum supervision for advisees. Specific courses may include - Introduction to Natural Resource Management, Park Operations and Maintenance Management, Parks and Recreation Administration, and Outdoor Recreation Certification (e.g., Leave No Trace Trainer Course). Depending on the candidate\'s expertise, other potential courses may be in the following topic areas: Recreation programming, natural history of protected areas, park planning/design, environmental interpretation, and/or natural resource-based tourism.
  • Develop and teach outdoor recreation experiential courses to be offered during the summer session.
  • Develop online versions of PMC courses that will be part of micro credentials, certifications, and/or an online degree program.
  • Serve as academic advisor to undergraduates in the PMC major (advising load is shared proportionally with other PMC faculty).
  • Advise or co-advise a PMC club/student organization.
  • Contribute to student recruitment and professional development of PMC undergraduate students.
  • Participate in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) through course and curriculum development, peer-reviewed publications, and/or collaborative activities that are validated by peers and communicated to others in the field.
  • Assist in the reporting related to accreditation by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (COAPRT).

  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as needed, and participate in service associated with professional organizations in PMC.

  • \ For Instructor, earned M.S. degree OR for Teaching Assistant Professor, earned Ph.D. degree by the time of employment, in park management and conservation, or a related field.
  • \ Experience in parks/protected area management and conservation, or a related field.
  • \ Commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • \ Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • \ Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work as a contributing team member.

\ Preferred Qualifications:

  • \ Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in park management and conservation, or a related discipline.
  • \ Demonstrated excellence in leading/guiding students in experiential outdoor recreation.
  • \ Experience with developing online courses and teaching online.
  • \ Experience with teaching certification classes related to park management and conservation.
  • \ Possess the vision and ability to expand the PMC program by increasing the variety of certification classes, online classes, and outdoor recreation experiential classes.
