Nature of Work

Monitors and assists with the coordination of the daily operations and activities assigned to various Recreation Programs.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed in a standard office environment, and in recreation facilities.

Physical Factors:

Moderate physical demands; some lifting and moving of supplies and equipment weighing up to forty (40) pounds.

Work Situation Factors:

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This posting will be used to fill a part-time, regular, non-exempt position, but may be used to fill multiple vacancies to include positions that are regular, or contract and may be full-time, part-time, or temporary in other sections of the Parks and Recreation Department.

This position is graded RN09.

Duties and Responsibilities

•Monitors the activities for and assists in recreation programs; assists with the planning of events and activities as directed by the immediate supervisor including special youth and children’s programs, City Parks and Recreation, special events, youth activities, field trips, mentoring program, recreation and sports programs.

• Assists participants during program activities; sets up and takes down equipment for activities and events; supervises and coaches participants as directed; maintains equipment and facilities in clean and safe condition.

• Provides a variety of clerical and office support duties; may assist with the ordering of materials and supplies; may assist with the collection of information and compilation of data for reports; creates, reviews and processes incident reports; assists immediate supervisor as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to a high school diploma AND two (2) years of experience in community service or recreation programs. Experience working with youth may be preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) may be preferred.

Licenses/Certification(s)

Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with city policy. Favorable results from applicable pre-employment and background checks required. First Aid and CPR certifications required within six months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: Policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using municipal recreational facilities, programs and equipment; equipment used in youth and recreational programs; community resources and support agencies; principles of records management and program management; business and personal computers, and specialized software applications; City policies and procedures.

Skills in: Performing duties in an organized, detailed-oriented manner; interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with people; effective oral and written communication.

Ability to: Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands; communicate effectively in verbal and written forms; establish and maintain effective working relations with employees, officials, other development agencies and the general public.
