Department Summary

The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,200 undergraduates and 100 graduate students, both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George A. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA. MS, and PhD, as well as a minor in Media Studies. The school also supports the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and interdisciplinary minors in multimedia and Native Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 125 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as roughly 50 student employees. The School is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.

The Center for Science Communication Research (SCR) within the SOJC focuses on three priorities:

• Conducting interdisciplinary research and creative inquiry to understand how scientific issues are conveyed to and understood by a variety of audiences;

• Attracting and training students for science communication careers of the future; and

• Enhancing public understanding of science.

Position Summary

The Program Manager works closely with the Director of the Center for Science Communication Research (SCR) to support the mission and activities of the center. Under the direction of the SCR Director, the Program Manager will plan, implement, and evaluate SCR programs, projects, and ongoing operations. Major duties include financial administration, organizing event logistics, supporting educational programs, doing outreach, and providing general administrative support. The Program Manager will foster a community of science communication research and practice on and off campus as well as ensure support for the center and its mission across the University of Oregon. As a result, the Program Manager also will work closely with affiliated faculty, Research Administration Services (RAS), SOJC business office, SOJC Advancement, and the SOJC communications office.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Strategic Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, Business/Marketing, or a related degree.

• Three years of experience in a higher education, non-profit, corporate, or similar environment, supporting a program or operation.

• Three years of experience managing project or program budgets.

• Three years of professional experience focused on financial planning/budget forecasting, fund accounting, and/or fiscal management.

Professional Competencies

• Experience using Outlook, Excel, and Word.

• Strong financial and budgetary skills with the ability to manage multiple budgets and project annual spending.

• Ability to set and achieve goals and provide reliable support to the program.

• Creativity/ability to develop innovative solutions.

• Ability to work with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds in an inclusive, welcoming environment; ability to effectively work and communicate with individuals from varied cultural backgrounds.

• Strong organizational skills.

• Strategic thinking skills, strong communication skills, and ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

• Excellent customer service skills, including detail orientation and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct experience as a project manager with simultaneous projects.

• Experience planning and implementing communication plans for public relations campaigns and events.

• Experience with recruitment.

• Established relationships with media communities and constituents.

• Experience with InDesign and/or other visual design software.

• Knowledge of UO systems and SOJC brand.

• Demonstrated ability to evaluate, interpret, and formulate policy and processes to ensure they meet program goals and comply with university policy.

• Experience with software such as Asana, Jira, or other project management software.

• Experience in maintaining websites using WordPress, Drupal or other website management software.
