Description:

Surgical technologists work under the supervision of the surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures

-Ensures that the operating room environment is safe, the equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety

-Handles instrument, supplies and equipment necessary for the surgical procedure

-Directs other caregivers as a means to help manage operational issues

-Understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the need of the surgeon

-Identifies and recommends opportunities for more efficient and cost effective use of material resources

-Ensures quality patient care during operative procedure and vigilance for maintenance of sterile field

-Assists with positioning of patient using appropriate equipment

-Assists in circulating by obtaining additional instruments and supplies necessary during surgical procedures

-Acts as preceptor to develop, assess and validate clinical competencies of team members

-Seeks opportunities to teach, coach and mentor others

-Participates with improvement in customer satisfaction

-Properly cares for specimens and ensures safe handling and disposition

-Demonstrates knowledge of guidelines, policies and safety requirements as determined by relevant regulatory compliance organizations

-Follows the Environment of Care and Joint Commission Guidelines

-Participates in department Quality Improvement, development and compliance of departmental policies and procedures as it relates to performance of duties

-Follows procedure for labeling and identify medication and or solutions on and off sterile field in perioperative and all other procedural settings
