Position Summary

Michigan is one of the leading producers of ornamental production in the nation and weed control is important for improving the production and marketability of the ornaments. Ornamental weed management research (Saha) lab works on developing new and improving current methods in weed control for the nursery, greenhouses, landscapes, and Christmas tree production systems. Research is focused on non-chemical and chemical methods of weed control, ornamental crop safety trials, USDA IR-4 project trials, chemical company research trials and herbicide efficacy trials on specific weed species.

We are seeking applications for a Research Associate (postdoctoral) position to lead analysis and preparation of manuscripts for ongoing projects related to liverwort control in greenhouses and nursery container production, Christmas tree herbicide safety field trials, and the effect of climate change on weed control and to write technical research reports for USDA IR-4 project trials and chemical company trials. Given the diversity of ongoing projects, applicant interests and expertise can guide project focus.

Contribution to the lab’s ongoing research and grant proposal development is expected and may guide future research directions. Opportunities to lead greenhouse, field, and laboratory research, present at conferences, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and pursue novel research directions through mentored postdoctoral fellowship proposals are available and encouraged.

Desired areas of expertise include conducting weed control trials in greenhouses, outdoor container production, growth chamber, and field trials as well as in laboratory. Expertise in handling and application of pesticides (mostly herbicides), statistical data analysis by SAS and R are also an asset.
