The Role and the Company

This position is responsible for the leadership and direction of sales, production, and strategic growth of Heidelberg Materials’ aggregate operations in the Southeast Region. In this capacity, the incumbent will set strategic and tactical goals and manage the achievement of business profitability through operational efficiency and marketing strategies for our aggregates business. This complex management unit consists of approx. 30 aggregate operations and 2 recycle operations. This position will report to the Southeast Region President.

What you will get to do

  • Champion a culture of safety excellence leading to safe performance and compliance.

  • Provide vision, direction, and strategies necessary to lead the business.

  • Ensure business goals and objectives are in line with the overall business strategy of the Southeast Region and Heidelberg Materials organization, both short and long-term.

  • Lead, guide and develop the management team toward achieving business goals, growing profitability, and expanding customer base.

  • Maintain awareness of market conditions and the impact on the business, adjusting strategies and tactics as needed to achieve results. Build direct relationships with key customers. In conjunction with operations personnel, maintain or enhance communication with customers, suppliers, etc. to ensure the necessary components are in place to provide superior customer service and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Develop overall production plans and area budgets. Provide direction to management and oversee progress to ensure that plans are met while being prudent in cost and inventory management.

  • Ensure talent management and acquisition strategies are in place to provide optimal staffing and performance for the business unit and company.

  • Identify acquisition and merger opportunities and provide project management of internal and external resources to grow our organization’s footprint.

  • Develop, implement, and measure performance results on a regular basis and take corrective action as required.

  • Oversee capital budgets, operating budgets, and operating costs. Responsible for reviewing and approval of all capital expenditures.

  • Work closely with central support functions teams to identify continuous improvement opportunities and implement cost savings measures where appropriate.

  • Participate in industry and community organizations to facilitate the recognition and reputation of the company.

  • Support and drive digitalization and sustainability initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations/permits and Group guidelines in area of responsibility.

Who we are looking for

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the construction industry; experience in multiple product lines preferably including aggregates.

  • 7-10 years’ experience in progressively responsible positions in sales, operations or engineering; demonstrated safety excellence.

  • Proven leadership in the construction materials industry, with a strong understanding of both operations and sales.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA preferred.

  • In depth understanding of the financial aspects of a business, including P&L statements and budgets including understanding of the justification process for projects.

  • Significant market pricing knowledge and cost awareness.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and cross functional departments.

  • Demonstrated negotiation skills.

  • Solid computer skills, including MS Office Suite of products.

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate others to achieve results.

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on sound business reasoning.

  • Ability to manage changing situations effectively.

Work Environment

  • Role operates primarily in in an office setting but will also operate in a manufacturing environment with moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity, elevated noise levels, and dusty conditions as dictated by project requirements.

  • Must be able to occasionally climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces and enter confined spaces.

  • The role will require significant travel across multiple states. Travel is expected 40 – 60% of the weeks in a year to be effective in the role.
