Description

Under general supervision, directs the work activities of a moderately large ground maintenance operation in an assigned district or comparable area.

Examples of Duties

  1. Supervises a large group of workers engaged in the upkeep of parks, playgrounds parkways, medians, boulevards, athletic fields, pools and canals.

  2. Assigns crews and workers to various projects and tasks.

  3. Provides instruction and project details to subordinate employees.

  4. Develops and implements training procedures as necessary.

  5. Ensures that the application of pesticides conforms to pertinent safety regulations.

  6. Inspects work in process and upon completion.

  7. Confers with management regarding plans, policies, and work progress.

  8. Requisitions equipment and supplies.

  9. Manages data collection from district crews and submits reports of work activities.

  10. Ensures proper maintenance of tools and equipment.

  11. Tracks employee attendance and work performance and issues discipline as necessary.

  12. Evaluates projects for consideration as capital improvements.

  13. Confers with management about yearly budget requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduation or G.E.D.

Three years of experience in ground maintenance or landscape activities, preferably including two years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

Employees in this class shall be required to obtain a State of Michigan Commercial Driver License with a Group B endorsement within 6 months of being hired. Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State of Motor Carrier Safety Act-1988.

Employees in this class must possess a valid State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification with category 6.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
