Job Description

This is a Temporary non-merit position with the Department of Health and Human Services.

This position performs the responsibilities of a driver for the Bureau of Refugee Services and has the following responsibilities:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

  • Must be able to drive vehicles as large as a 15-passenger van

  • Drive state vehicles to pick up refugees at home or at designated sites to go to work at various locations in the Greater Des Moines area at various times during the day or night

  • Pick up refugees at various work locations In the Greater Des Moines area and at various times of the day or night and transport them home or to designated drop off sites

  • Refuel vehicles as necessary, check vehicle oil, lights, tires, etc.

  • Perform emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, fuses, light bulbs, etc.

  • Keep required records and monitor periodic maintenance requirements for vehicle and inform the mobility coordinator if maintenance or other repairs are needed

  • Inform the supervisor about uncooperative riders

  • Keep vehicle interiors clean and free of debris

  • Informs supervisor of any uncooperative riders

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

  • Assure the client specific information is handled in compliance with DHS confidentiality rules
