Job Overview

The Senior Accountant will provide accounting expertise and direction to ensure the timely and accurate processing and reporting of accounting and financial transactions and will assist with implementing rigorous processes that ensure strong internal controls. The person who fills this position will mentor and lead a team of individuals responsible for processing accounts payable. This position will require an individual who has a solid understanding of the fundamentals of accounting, accounting process and system improvements and internal controls. This role will support Systems Control in Iron Mountain, MI. This is a hybrid position.

A Day In The life

  • Perform month-end close activities for financial statement reporting

  • Assess proper accounting treatment in accordance with GAAP

  • Manage the accounts payable processes to meet departmental goals

  • Provide support and maintain costing for projects and inventory

  • Participate and assist in formal and informal process improvements efforts

  • Assist with external statutory audits

  • Team building: recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees

  • Coaching/mentoring employees: planning, monitoring and appraising job results

  • Provide training to other departments to explain accounting procedures and ensure accurate financial reporting

  • Other assigned duties

What will help you thrive in this role?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting

  • Minimum five years accounting experience including accounts payable and general ledger, preferably in a unionized, manufacturing environment

  • Public accounting experience desirable

  • Minimum of two years supervisory experience

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook

  • Experience with ERP software (SyteLine preferred)

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles

  • Strong understanding of internal controls, process flows and policies and procedures

  • Skilled at evaluating employees’ performance in a balanced and consistent manner and providing training, direction, and support

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and delegate tasks to meet timelines

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to work and effectively interact with various departments throughout the organization

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced, forward-thinking work environment
