Job ID 12672 Location Case Main Campus Full/Part Time Full-Time Regular/Temporary Regular Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE Working under moderate supervision, perform research work in the biomedical field. The research lab develops nanotechnology tools to better understand cardiometabolic and neurological diseases such as atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and traumatic brain injury. The Research Assistant will assist and support scientists in the lab and perform standard molecular techniques (PCR, electrophoresis, RNA extraction), tissue-culturing /cell culture work, animal work, tissue processing (immunohistochemistry) and general lab maintenance. The research assistant will also collect, verify, record, and compile data and information related to the ongoing research carried out in the lab. This position will work with animals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Conduct analysis of samples (histological analysis, cell-based and biochemical assay analysis). Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involving the use of lab/ research skills with lab members by performing procedures and operating a variety of instruments and scientific equipment, i.e. microscopy, PCR, gel electrophoresis, biochemical assays, and others. (20%) Maintain animal colonies and assist with procedures such as diet manipulation, drug administration, organ isolation, taking care of animals and general maintenance. (15%) Collect and organize data, keep records using electronic lab notebook. Maintain records of experiments. Organize raw data and update lab-related data folders. (20%) Maintain cell/ tissue cultures for experimental purposes (20%) Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments. This includes using and maintaining fluorescence microscope, plate reader, PCR equipment. Maintain chemical/biological inventory in compliance with EHS, and order laboratory supplies if needed. Configure and operate laboratory instruments; ensure instruments are kept in working order. (20%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform other duties as assigned, including laboratory waste management, communication with technical support if issues with existing lab equipment arise. (5%) CONTACTS Department: Continuous contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow. University: Infrequent contact with other departments to share information. External: Infrequent or no contact with vendors to exchange information. Students: Regular contact with student employees to exchange information. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required. REQUIRED SKILLS Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a molecular biology field (PCR, RNA Isolation). Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Ability to operate laboratory equipment. Computer skills and ability to quickly learn software, databases, online applications (Google and Amazon services). Ability to meet consistent attendance. Ability to stay organized.
