City of Chicopee Water Meter Repairperson in Chicopee, Massachusetts

Water Meter Repairperson SUMMARY The City of Chicopee\'s Department of Public Works / Water Division is hiring a Water Meter Repairperson who performs skilled maintenance work in the replacement, installation, repair, testing, and maintenance of water meters and appurtenances. Investigates possible water leaks and locates Service Boxes or Gate Valves used to perform such work. Aids in the implementation of the Water Shut-Off Policy under the direction of the superintendent. SOME ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE Installs Commercial, Industrial, and Residential water meters as adopted by the Water Department. Verifies installation completion status of meters using various reports and systems, identifies non-communicating meters, and identifies/resolves discrepancies. Opens manhole covers, pumps out meter pits as needed to install, repair, read and maintain water meters. Keeps accurate records as to the location, size, make and serial numbers of meters. Checks water pressure in dwellings and performs flow tests to determine possible restrictions. Inspects water service for leaks, faulty register, damaged meters, cross connections, and illegal connections relating to the meter and/or water service installation. Maintains and stocks utility truck assigned to the Meter Repairmen, to ensure both the vehicle is in good working order, clean, and is stocked with all necessary components required for each day\'s scheduled work as well as emergency work. Willingness to work in confined spaces such as meter pits, behind walls and under stairs where water meters and services are typically located. Must be available for emergency work in the event of a water main failure (nights and weekends). May be required to work Emergency Stand-By duty. Abides by City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies and procedures. QUALIFICATIONS To be minimally qualified for this position, one must meet the following criteria: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Two (2) years of experience in water meter installation, in addition to two (2) years of experience as a Water Systems Maintenance worker. Knowledge of and experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks. Working knowledge of a wide variety of hand tools, air tools and hydraulic tools. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Willingness to perform heavy manual labor. Licenses (If Applicable) MA Class B CDL Driver\'s License - Class A Preferred, MA Water Distribution License Grade 2 Required Salary/Compensation Employment Status: Non-Exempt; Full-Time Salary: UFCW Laborer?s Union, Grade 08L, Step 05, Starting pay - \$20.69 + License(s) Expected Hours of Work This is a Full Time, 40 hours/week position, with a schedule of 7:00 AM - 3:30PM, Monday - Friday, with required flexibility for on-call and emergency situations.
