Histologist/Histotechnologist

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Performs the duties of a histotechnologist for a specific area/section of the Laboratory or rotates in all sections/areas as needed.

  • Prepares tissue obtained from surgical and autopsy sources, as directed, by processing in tissue processors; embeds in paraffin; cuts sections by microtome; mounts on slide; identifies by number; stains by Hematoxylin and Eosin, or appropriate stains; dehydrates; and clears and coverslips using standard procedures.

  • Performs procedures as required following outlines in procedure manuals, with minimal supervision.

  • Assures proper functioning, maintenance, and cleanliness of equipment and work area.

  • Maintains all required records, logs, charts, and files.

  • Prepares various required solutions as necessary following standard formulas and measurements; troubleshoots methods, procedures, and instruments as needed according to departmental procedures.

  • Monitors and maintains adequate inventory for daily testing routine.

  • Performs quality control using established protocols.

  • Attends in services and meetings as required. Keeps up-to-date with new methods and improvements. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional affiliations.

  • Performs other similar or related duties as required or as directed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related discipline or equivalent education, training, experience, and certification in histology strongly preferred.
