This position will assist the engineering efforts for product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing products. A Design Engineer will champion the transformation of Industrial Design concepts (sketch and 3D data) into functional and manufacturable products during Newell's Product Development processes using engineering design, prototyping, product validation, and testing. This role is responsible for engineering products to meet cost, timing, and specifications laid out by Newell. A Design Engineer will work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain. This role requires use of Computer Aided Design to create functional mechanical designs that can be manufactured using injection molding, metal bending, and other processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Create top-down master, skeleton, and kinematic models containing complex surfaces to capture Industrial Design Intent and create functional CAD models and prototypes.

• Applies some finite element analysis (FEA) for comparative design purposes.

• Create parts and assemblies that are designed for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and cost.

• Participates in both creative and technical brainstorms across disciplines to achieve design targets.

• Demonstrates working knowledge of manufacturing tolerances and manufacturing methods related to plastic injection molding, metal bending (tube, wire, and sheet), and hardware.

• Uses rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printing (FFF, SLS, SLA) and others to validate design concepts and part functionality .

• Takes direction from the Product Engineer to modify and iterate designs to meet product requirements.

• Manage and organize product data (CAD models, 2D drawings, Model Based Definition, and other documentation) in a Product Lifecycle Management system (Windchill).

• Creates innovative designs that result in superior products which can be then turned into ownable IP.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred)

• 2-5 years of product development or product design engineering experience

• Demonstrated ability to bring products to market

• Demonstrates proficiency in CAD (Creo preferred)

• Demonstrates knowledge and portfolio of how to solve real-world problems using CAD and other tools

• Demonstrates basic understanding of applicable manufacturing processing

• Demonstrates strong interpersonal and cross functional skills

• Demonstrates excellent communication skills-verbal and written

• Demonstrates ability to perform in a team environment

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel)

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of manufacturing methods for plastic injection mold design and tube/wire/sheet metal bending is a plus

• Knowledge of softgoods assembly to hardgoods is a plus

• Knowledge of electronics and how to integrate them into a design is a plus

• Knowledge of programming (firmware, software, AI) is a plus

• Experience working with Industrial Designers is a plus

• A short portfolio of previous engineering design experience (work, school, or personal projects) is required to be submitted with the application
