JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Intelligent Vehicles and Systems Group is seeking proactive and detail-oriented individuals to join our team as paid research internships, under a title “Summer Research Internship”. This multifaceted role involves providing essential support for developing, deploying, and testing key technologies for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), Mapping Vehicles (MVs), advanced simulations, and deployment and integration of roadside sensors and equipment including advanced 5G systems. We welcome applicants from a wide range of disciplines – engineering, programming, digital media, and communications.

The positions below are separated by tasks that emphasize certain skill sets. It is expected that a student will concentrate within one area, but students may choose to work on and/or transition into multiple tasks. A diversity of skills is appreciated and welcomed.

Track Support:

  • Assist with setting up and dismantling equipment at the track including deployment, positioning, and recovery of specialized work zone equipment including barrels, cones, signs, etc. that may have embedded computers and positioning systems

  • Install and remove specialized paint coating tapes that adhere to pavement surfaces

  • Document results (photos, spreadsheets) and log information into webpages and wiki entries

  • Provide general assistance to ensure smooth operations during track sessions

Requirements: Physical strength is needed. Some computer skills needed for data entry.

Mapping vehicle hardware support:

  • Clean and fix CAD drawings for mapping van and sensor installations

  • Design, build, and test mounts for new cameras, LIDAR, radar, and other equipment on the mapping van

  • Organize and document cabling, wiring, and signal paths within the mapping van

Requirements: Basic engineering capabilities including CAD skills (Solidworks), basic fabrication and machine shop training, and basic understanding of electrical wiring.

Mapping vehicle software support:

  • Build and test software systems in Robot Operating System to support message passing between network sensor systems

  • Developing test procedures and visualizations for real-time data views

Requirements: Strong familiarity with Linux and one or more of the core programming languages in ROS (Python, C++, and/or C).

Additional Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Most positions will require a valid and current driver's license

  • Means of Daily transportation to/from test track (10 miles from campus)

This job may require that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check may be required in addition to standard background checks.
