Los Alamos National Laboratory Classified Material Science Research Technician (Research Technician 4/5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Engineered Materials Group (MST-7) is a successful group of highly motivated scientists, engineers, technologist, and technicians with world-class materials science capabilities to include additive manufacturing (AM), materials synthesis, coatings, material testing and qualification, part manufacturing, and micro-machining. MST-7 is focused on a multi-disciplinary approach to push the state-of-the-art in engineered materials to be responsive to emergent national security requirements, trusted stakeholders, and production agency needs.

The position resides in the Materials Aging and Predictive Science Team. The selected candidate will provide technical support for AM research, analysis, development, design, assembly, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment and research activities. The candidate needs to have experience working in a Vault Type Room (VTR) , handling classified matter using tools such as Classified Parts Inventory Management system (CPIMS ). The candidate will also need to have experience in managing a VTR, coordination, quality control, storage and disposition of materials, ensuring safe and compliant packaging and transportation of classified materials, and providing technical assistance. The candidate's work is directly related to national security objectives requiring the ability to secure and protect sensitive or classified information.

This position will be filled at either the R&D Technician 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Technician 4 ($69,500 - $110,300)

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Responsible for ensuring all work, materials, processes, and final product meet quality specification.

  • Work with multiple PIs and staff.

  • Assignments may be broad in scope requiring a broad background and experience in multiple areas, but limited technical scope.

  • Conduct technical work as directed or discussed by supervisor and perform the technical work at a skilled technician level.

  • Perform normal aspects of the job independently with limited supervision, perform non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment.

R&D Technician 5 ($83,900 - $136,600)

In addition to R&D Technician 4 responsibilities, the Technician 5 is expected to:

  • Provide technical support, validating results and reporting data with limited supervision.

  • Take initiative to analyze finding, interpret results, and summarize results.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with line, program and facilities personnel.

  • Become a senior level Technician on the systems for which the team is responsible for.

  • Perform work at a skilled technician level and perform normal aspects of the job independently with limited supervision.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of VTR operations, handling classified material, packing and transportation of hazardous and classified material.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of CPIMS and Materials Control & Accountability (MC&A )

  • Demonstrated knowledge of classified parts inventory.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as functioning independently on individual assignments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work productively on multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Experience in conducting scientific work while complying with Environment Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements and using appropriate administrative controls, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for a R&D Technician 5: 
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Engineered Systems Tec 5 level requires:

  • Experience in writing and reviewing technical documents such as Integrated Work Documents (IWD 's).

  • Knowledge and implementation of required safety, security, and quality assurance practices for the work assignment.

  • Knowledge of and experience with application of the scientific method and with discipline-relevant standards for the ethical conduct of research.

  • Knowledge of and experience in implementing Laboratory policies affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.

Education/Experience required for Research Technician 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience required for the Research Technician 5: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 7 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Q clearance.

  • Radiological experience.

  • Additive manufacturing experience.

  • Chemical testing and analysis experience.

  • Familiarity with waste processes and procedures.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
