The Special Projects, Home Infusion Pharmacist position fills an important role for Optum Infusion Services, focused on enhancing the quality of compounded products for our patients and providing better health outcomes. The Special Projects Home Infusion Pharmacist will be responsible for supporting various pharmacy operations, primarily focusing on sterile compounding activities across multiple locations. This role requires a high level of expertise in sterile compounding practices and adherence to regulatory standards. This role involves working in cleanrooms and pharmacy environments where sterile compounding takes place. Travel to different locations and occasional weekend or evening work might be required based on operational needs. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of sterile compounding practices across various pharmacy settings.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Travel to different pharmacy locations to provide expertise in sterile compounding techniques and assist in addressing operational needs

  • Monitor aseptic compounding of medications in compliance with USP <797> and <800> guidelines, ensuring accuracy and safety in every preparation

  • Conduct quality assurance checks on compounded medications, verifying accuracy, potency, and sterility prior to distribution

  • Provide training to pharmacy staff on sterile compounding procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices

  • Maintain accurate records of compounded medications, batch logs, and any necessary documentation required by regulatory bodies

  • Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations governing sterile compounding practices and maintain a high level of compliance within the pharmacy

  • Perform thorough review of environmental monitoring program of respective cleanrooms, ensuring adherence to all policies and procedures

  • Conduct local site assessments of garbing process, aseptic technique of staff and provide remediation support when necessary

  • Responsible for local leadership support, including acting as the pharmacist in charge and training new leadership upon hire

  • Demonstrated ability to train and influence on multiple levels

  • Support Regional Clinical Pharmacists in activities to include:

  • Pilot policy review, implementation, and training

  • Training, oversight and audit of OIS locations for regulatory inspection readiness

  • Act as a subject matter expert in the proper use and handling of sterile and hazardous medications. Compounds and handles sterile and hazardous medications in accordance with established guidelines and regulations (i.e., USP <797>)

  • Ensures compliance with all FDA, DEA, State Board of Pharmacy, OSHA and other regulatory standards. Follows all department policies and procedures. Participates in department staff meetings and other functions required in the department, maintains license, continuing education and competencies as required by the appropriate regulatory agency and department

Required Qualifications:

  • BS Pharmacy or PharmD degree

  • Active and unencumbered pharmacist license in good standing in the state of residence

  • 3+ years of Home Infusion and/or Sterile Compounding experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of USP<797> and <800> standards

  • Exceptional communication skills/professional presence with ability to lead and drive change

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team; excellent coaching / mentoring skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools and programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Travel averaging up to 75%, with flexibility for consecutive week travel for critical situations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree

  • Demonstrated expertise or Board Certification in one or more areas of pharmacy practice

  • Multi-state licensure

  • Accreditation experience: knowledge of standards to meet and maintain accreditation requirements (TJC, ACHC, URAC)

  • Experience with clean room design, equipment, monitoring and maintenance

  • Proven successful verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills and problem-solving skills

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington residents is $85,000 to $167,300 per year. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
